International Women’s Day 2019: “You Go Girl!”

Happy International Women’s Day, ladies! This day honestly means so much to me, not only as a woman but simply as a human being. Women’s rights and gender equality has been an ever going battle for decades and unfortunately, it’s a battle that still goes on to this day. Women everywhere are no strangers to discrimination or sexism as it is something that can be faced in many professions, even in the dance industry. However, despite the constant gender stereotypes and negative connotation we may endure, we continue to fight back and let the world know that there is no limit to what we can do or who we can be! So, in honor and celebration of women in the dance industry all over the world, today’s post will be focused on tips to keep in mind as you continue on your journey as a girl boss in the dance industry! Come on ladies, let’s get right into it!

My first tip on being a girl boss in this industry is to be who you are and own it. It is extremely unfortunate that I am able to say this, but I know female dancers who have been turned away by casting directors because they weren’t, quote on quote, “sexy” enough or didn’t have “the look” and even that they danced “too powerfully”. When I hear these things, it honestly makes sick to my stomach. We are not made from one mold. We are individuals with our own look, style, complete with our own energy and this is something that we as women, shouldn’t have to apologize for. So, whoever you are, whether your femanine, edgy or maybe even a tomboy, know who you are and own who you are because the first step to being a boss is being comfortable in your own skin without remorse.

Another huge tip that I live by as a woman in the dance industry is to make sure you rid yourself of all fear and self-doubt. Self-doubt will tell you that everything is over before it even starts, but in order to be successful, you have to let go of all negative energy and know that if you can set your mind to it, you can achieve it. Two of the biggest keys to success is a go getter mentality and self-belief. Completely brainwash yourself with the knowledge that nothing, absolutely nothing, is out of your reach. Push the envelope, go where others’ won’t, take chances and go after what sets your soul on fire. No fear.

Thirdly, by all means, don’t be afraid to hang with the boys. As women, sometimes we are seen as the softer, feminine side to our male counterparts but that doesn’t mean that’s all we are. Women have the full capability to go hard in the studio and hit choreography just as strong as the men! So never be intimated to dance with the fellas. Anything they can do, we can do just as well!

And last but certainly not least, never let anyone tell you that you aren’t qualified to do your job just because you are a woman. No matter your gender, your goals are completely attainable and achievable. As I stated earlier in this post, don’t be afraid to go where others won’t go or do things that may scare others to do. Be the first, be the original, heck, even be the only! Women are strong, powerful and capable of so much. So, don’t be afraid to be the trailblazer that you were born to be!

From one boss babe to another, I wish you the best of luck and I look forward to seeing you make your mark on this industry. Happy International Women’s Day!

Keep Dancing!
