What Does Dance Mean To You?

Hello there, dancers and welcome back to From The Top! Tomorrow is the official National Dance Day festivities of 2019 and we’re so excited to see what The American Dance Movement (formerly known as the DizzyFeet Foundation) has in store! In celebration of the new NDD celebration date, we’re kicking off this weekend with an awesome question: What Does Dance Mean To You? Dance is such an amazing art form that means so much to so many people around the world! Every now and again it’s always a great idea to sit and remind ourselves of what it means to all of us individually.

For me, dance has always meant safety. It has always been such a huge part of my life and during my formative years, it really was an amazing outlet of self expression. I always feel most like myself when I’m dancing or teaching. No matter what I may have faced in my day, whenever I walk into the studio or head to teach one of my classes, I’m immediately at peace and all my troubles just seem to melt. And as cheesy as all of this may sound, it is the honest truth. To dance is to be in my element. I can simply let go and be free.

Dance to me also means authenticity. When you truly think about it, art forms of any kind cause others to show their true selves. Music, painting, writing, dancing are all activities that involuntarily strip away peoples exterior and shows a peak of who we all truly are. For some, that may seem a bit scary but for me, it’s beautiful. With dance there is no ego, just expression and that is something that is extremely honorable.
Though we all come from different walks of life, our one commonality is that we all love the art of dance equally as much, for many different reasons.

So, as we embark on celebrating this amazing gift tomorrow, let’s collectively ask ourselves this question and reflect on what dance means to each and every one of us! If you would like to share your personal thoughts on what dance means to you in the comments of this post, we highly encourage you to do just that. We love to see our community bond in the name of what we love! Have a wonderful weekend everyone and I’ll see you back next week for another blog post!

Keep dancing!
